Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

What are the Symptoms of Osteoarthritis?

If you think you may be suffering from Osteoarthritis, here are some symptoms that will help you determine whether you need to see your doctor:

  • Pain: Your joints may ache, or the pain may feel burning or sharp. For some people, it may get better after a while. Pain while sleeping or constant pain may be a sign that your arthritis is getting worse.
  • Stiffness: When you have arthritis, getting up in the morning can be hard.
osteoarthirits symptoms of stiffing and creaky.
Your joints may feel stiff and creaky for a short time, until you get moving. You may also get stiff from sitting.
  • Swelling: Arthritis can cause some swelling in your joints, making them feel tender and sore.
  • Loss of mobility: You'll start to notice that you have limited joint movement making you less flexible than you once were. The muscles around the joint may get weaker. (This happens a lot with arthritis in the knee.)
  • Water on the knee: When excess fluid accumulates either in or around the knee joint, causing knee swelling.
  • Deformed joints: Joints can start to look like they are the wrong shape, especially as arthritis gets worse, leading to conditions such as Heberden’s/Bouchard’s nodes in the fingers ("knobby" appearance of the middle and end joints of the fingers) and bunions in the toes.
  • Crepitus (fancy word for a crackling sound): Your joints may make crunching, creaking sounds when you move.
  • Depression: Suffering through chronic, debilitating pain can cause you to feel hopeless.

What causes these painful “flare-ups”?

MendMeShop Success Stories

When a flare-up occurs, the pain can be excruciating. Knowing what potentially causes these painful flare-ups, can help you to modify your lifestyle or at least prepare for the next episode to strike. These are some potential causes:

  • Humid weather is a suspected culprit in producing flare-ups. Humidity has been known to agitate and increase pain for most osteoarthritis sufferers.
  • Strenuous physical exercise can put a lot of strain on your joints. Instead of jogging, try swimming, which is an excellent form of exercise, yet does not put strain on your joints.
  • Being overweight puts extra strain on the joints, resulting in more frequent flare-ups. Getting to a healthy weight, will definitely help to decrease your flare-ups.
