Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis

What are some of the symptoms of psoriatic arthritis?

Psoriatic arthritis will generally develop in one of two ways:

  • Localized mild psoriatic arthritis develops slowly, with mild symptoms, and affects less than five joints. People with this type of psoriatic arthritis will often live without symptoms for an extended period of time.
  • Generalized disabling psoriatic arthritis is a more serious form of the disease that affects five or more joints at the same time. This form of the disease will often lead to permanent joint damage and disability, and requires medication early. In severe cases, surgery and rehabilitation may be required.

Some symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include:

  • Joint pain. Joint pains are common for psoriatic arthritis sufferers. Depending on the type you have, the pain is felt in different parts of your body or on both sides. The most frequently involved joints are those of the hand, knees, and wrists, but also the spine and shoulder joints.
  • Inflammation. Muscle, joint, and tendon inflammation may occur. If so, you’ll notice swelling and experience pain in the affected joint. Fluid collects in the affected joint, causing it to swell and stiffen.
  • Morning stiffness. A term used to describe the stiffness felt in the joints of the arthritis sufferers when they wake up in the morning. Morning stiffness generally lasts for half an hour or so, but can sometimes last for over an hour.
  • Toe and finger nail changes. Your nails can loosen, lines can appear across them, and tiny holes can develop in them.
  • Eye conditions. You may develop conditions, such as iritis or conjunctivitis (pink eye). With iritis, the colored part of the eye (iris) may become inflamed. Symptoms of iritis include redness and pain in the eye and sensitivity to light. With conjunctivitis, the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids becomes inflamed.
  • Dactylitis. A sometimes painful condition that causes fingers and toes to swell and resemble sausages.

What causes these painful flare-ups?

There is usually no clear trigger for psoriatic arthritis flare-ups. They occur and tend to vary according to the individual.
