Of the diseases or injuries that affect your joints, arthritis is no doubt the best-known joint disease. There are however many other diseases that can affect the joints. These diseases may be short-lived or chronic, agonizingly painful, or merely a minor irritation and discomfort, they may be confined to one joint or may affect many as well as other parts of the body.

Diseases that can mimic arthritis include:

  • Hypertrophic Osteoarthropathy more commonly known as 'Clubbing' in humans is a deformity of the fingers and fingernails that is associated with a number of diseases, mostly of the heart and lungs.
  • Multiple Myeloma is a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow. Myeloma cells may also attack your bones causing pain and making bones crack or fracture more easily.
  • Osteoporosis is a disease that causes a decrease of bone mineral density increasing the risk of fractures. Minor fractures in bones close to a joint can cause pain and inflammation resembling a form of arthritis.
  • Fifth disease is also referred to as erythema infectiosum (meaning infectious redness) and as slapped cheek syndrome, slapcheek, slap face or slapped face, apple sickness or ringo-byo.

Conditions caused by symptoms:

  • Muscle and Bone Atrophy is a condition that can be caused by prolonged immobility. Atrophy is the partial or complete wasting away of a part of the body and is a general physiological process of reabsorption and breakdown of tissues.
  • Clinical Depression is a serious illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts that cannot simply be willed or wished away. It is often a disabling disease that affects a person's work, family and school life, sleeping and eating habits, general health and ability to enjoy life.
